Your engagement season is such a special chapter, full of excitement, anticipation, and all the little moments leading up to your wedding day. Engagement sessions are about more than just beautiful photos; they’re a chance to slow down, celebrate your relationship, and get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day arrives.
If you’re feeling a little nervous about your session, don’t worry that’s completely normal! My goal is always to make your experience feel relaxed, fun, and authentic to you as a couple. To help you prepare, I’ve put together some of my favorite engagement session tips and tricks so you can walk into your session feeling confident and excited.
Choose a Location That Feels Meaningful
The best engagement sessions happen in places that feel personal to your story. Whether it’s a downtown street you love exploring together, a quiet beach at sunset, your favorite coffee shop, or a scenic trail where you spend weekends hiking, meaningful locations help create photos that truly reflect your relationship.
Don’t stress about choosing the “perfect” spot sometimes the simplest locations end up creating the most genuine moments.
Plan Your Session Around Golden Hour
Lighting plays a huge role in creating those dreamy, romantic images you see in engagement galleries. That’s why most photographers love scheduling sessions during “golden hour” the hour just after sunrise or before sunset.
The light during this time is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. It also helps create that natural glow and dreamy atmosphere that photographs beautifully.
Trust me it’s worth adjusting your schedule for that perfect light!
Wear Outfits That Make You Feel Confident
One of the biggest questions couples ask is: “What should we wear?”
My biggest advice? Choose outfits that feel like an elevated version of yourselves. You want to look polished while still feeling comfortable and natural.
A few outfit tips:
Coordinate colors instead of perfectly matching
Stick with neutral or earthy tones for a timeless look
Avoid busy patterns, neon colors, or large logos
Choose outfits you can comfortably move and walk in
Consider one casual look and one dressier outfit
Flowy dresses, layered textures, and timeless pieces always photograph beautifully and add movement to your images.
Consider Professional Hair & Makeup But Stay True to Yourself
Some couples choose to have their hair and makeup professionally done for their engagement session, and it can definitely be a fun way to feel a little extra polished or even do a trial run before the wedding day.
But most importantly, I want you to look and feel like yourself.
If you normally do your own hair and makeup and feel most confident that way, absolutely stick with what makes you comfortable! You do not need professional glam to look beautiful in your photos. The best images come when you feel relaxed, confident, and authentic to who you are.
Whether you go full glam or keep things simple and natural, your session is about capturing you — exactly as you are in this season of life.
Don’t Worry About Posing
This is probably the number one concern couples have and I promise, you do not need to know how to pose.
My job is to guide you through the entire session so nothing feels awkward or forced. I’ll prompt you naturally, help with movement, and create moments that feel genuine instead of overly posed.
The best photos usually come from the in-between moments anyway the laughs, the forehead kisses, the way you naturally look at each other.
Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
The most meaningful engagement photos happen when couples simply connect with each other.
Talk, laugh, walk together, hold hands, cuddle close, and enjoy the moment. Think of your session less like a photoshoot and more like a date night where I just happen to be tagging along with a camera.
When you focus on each other instead of worrying about being “perfect,” the magic happens naturally.
Bring Something Personal
Want to make your engagement session even more unique? Bring along something meaningful to your relationship!
Some fun ideas include:
Your dog
A champagne toast
A picnic setup
Vintage cars or motorcycles
Flowers
A cozy blanket
Activities you love doing together
Personal touches help tell your story and make your gallery feel even more authentic.
Be Flexible With the Weather
Sometimes weather doesn’t cooperate and that’s okay! Overcast skies can actually create beautiful soft lighting, and a little wind can add movement and romance to your photos.
If conditions become extreme, we can always discuss rescheduling options. The most important thing is creating an experience that feels enjoyable and stress-free.
Treat It Like a Date Night
One of the best things you can do before your session is simply relax and enjoy the experience together.
Plan dinner afterward, grab coffee beforehand, or make an evening out of it. When couples come into their session excited to spend time together rather than stressing about photos, it always shows in the final gallery.
Trust the Process
At the end of the day, your engagement session isn’t about perfection it’s about celebrating your relationship exactly as it is right now.
The genuine smiles, quiet moments, joyful laughter, and connection between you two are what matter most. Those are the moments you’ll look back on years from now and treasure forever.
I’m so excited to help capture this season of your story in a way that feels authentic, joyful, and uniquely you.
